What is a Naming Ceremony?

Naming ceremonies are very different from a baptism or christening. A naming ceremony is non-religious, and is a way of celebrating and welcoming the arrival of a new child into the family. It can also be a way of uniting stepchildren or adopted children into a family, such as during marriage. This type of ceremony does not prevent the child from holding or participating in a religious ceremony at any stage of their life.

Naming ceremonies involve the important people in the child’s life; family and special friends. Parents have the opportunity to ask other adults to play a supportive role to their child through to adult life (grandparents, godparents, mentors or supporters). A naming ceremony does not have any legal status, but is a wonderful way of welcoming a child as they begin their journey through life.
